Description

Geometric methods to detect rate-induced tipping events. This project aims to develop a novel geometric framework for rate-induced tipping (R-tipping) events. In ecosystems, R-tipping occurs when an environmental change is too fast for the ecosystem to adapt. Detecting these critical rates in such multi-timescale systems is paramount to society for tackling the problems of the climate crisis. Expected outcomes will be the development of a new powerful mathematical theory including the creation of diagnostic tools to identify key parameters for controlling rate-induced tipping events. Benefits include advancing remediation strategies for critical transition intervention, and national and international collaborations will promote research excellence and enhance the next-generation student training..
